WJC Writing Workshop: November 2019

The Places We Come From, The Stories We Tell

How do you respond to the question, “where do you come from?”  Do you name an actual place?  A room? A house or apartment, street, or neighborhood, town or country?   Family, religion, race or gender, class or politics?  Or language or languages? What are the stories we live by, often without knowing it?  What value does history serve in our stories?  Or memory, culture, genetics, rituals or customs?  Our values and beliefs?  Our sense of where we live—or belong—as Jews?

We’ll explore these questions as they shape the stories we tell (or want to tell) about our own lives.  We’ll consider the ways stories take form in various genres and media, in writing, in fiction, non-fiction, poetry; in film, art, the news, history, and science.  And how, as writers, we draw from actual events, images, memories, literature, letters, music, history, genealogy, research, and artifacts (what anthropologists call “objects of ethnography”), and from our own imagination.

The Workshop is now in its third season…

Instructor:  Judith Summerfield
