High Holiday History

JILL CASLIN ARCHIVIST

On the afternoon of the first day of the New Year (or on the second day if the first is a Shabbat), many Jews gather near a flowing body of water to “cast all sins into the depths of the sea.” Tashlich means “you will cast.” Often crumbs of bread—a symbol of sins and of broken promises—are thrown into the moving water.

This photo was taken on Rosh Hashanah in 1974 at Harbor Island with Rabbi Koslowe presiding.
