The discovery of a 3rd century C.E. synagogue at Dura-Europus in Syria contains the earliest known paintings of biblical scenes. Dr. Ira Spar, a professor of ancient history at Ramapo College of New Jersey and former research Assyriologist at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, will be speaking here at WJC. His lecture on the Dura synagogue paintings will include highlights of Professor Spar’s journey to the ancient site which was first discovered in 1932 and his analysis of Jewish religious life and traditions of the 3rd century through Hebrew, Aramaic and Persian inscriptions.
