In 1955, renowned French filmmaker Alain Resnais produced Night and Fog, depicting the Nazis’ systematic destruction of people. Forty years later, Steven Spielberg produced Survivors of the Holocaust. Both documentaries used the same archival visual material to present distinctly different presentations. We will review these two films and talk about whether there is a right or wrong way to teach the Holocaust.
Dr. Joram Warmund, a vital member of our Holocaust Learning Center, is Professor and recently retired Chairman of History at Long Island University’s Brooklyn campus. He received his Bachelor’s, Master’s and Ph.D. degrees from Queens College (1961), Columbia University (1962), and New York University (1968) respectively.
