Join us for a screening of the extraordinary, multi-award-winning film ‘SHTTL’ and meet its starring actor Moshe Lobel. In a single unflinching shot, the film vividly portrays the life of a Yiddish village in the hours before the German invasion of Soviet Ukraine in 1941. The return of aspiring filmmaker Mendele (Lobel) from a secular life in Kyiv to claim the woman he loves exposes the simmering tensions between tradition and modernity in a town, and a world, on the brink of extinction. Filmed in Ukraine prior to the 2022 full-scale Russian invasion, in a fully built ‘shtetl’ recreated for the production, this original work of filmmaking evokes clear parallels with the present day. It is in Yiddish with English subtitles.
The Q&A with Moshe Lobel (pictured left) following the screening will be moderated by Dr. Elissa Nelson, professor of film at Bronx Community College – CUNY.
Please come for a buffet breakfast starting at 9:30 am. The program and screening will begin promptly at 10 am.
“EXTRAORDINARY… AN AMAZING FILM! It recreates, in a way I’ve rarely seen, just how life in the shtetl might have been. To hear words they used around the Friday night table is both a joy and a ghostly feeling.” – Jason Solomons, The New European 10 out of 10
“A MASTERPIECE! Insightful, beautiful, and completely unforgettable. This monumental film feels vital not only as an absolutely essential Jewish film but as an exquisite testament to those beautiful lives that never came to be.” – Barry Levitt, /Film (Slashfilm)
