WHO: Award winning investigative reporter, guest Debra Kamin to speak to WJC community
WHAT: A presentation and discussion about Race and Place, Part II (Part I was our exploration of slavery here in Mamaroneck Township)

Black homeowners facing racial discrimination in appraisals is a theme Debra Kamin has followed for the past several years. Her NY TIMES pieces on this subject prompted a national conversation that led President Biden to create a task force on property appraisals.

Kamin’s work appears regularly in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and other periodicals including Variety. For that publication she covered the culture and entertainment desk in Israel having lived there for close to a decade. She reports on topics as diverse as post genocide Rwanda, the successful treatment of Autism with Cannabis (the featured cover article in TIME, Travel (Conde Nast magazine) Real Estate (you often see her byline when you read “the Hunt’ in Sundays’ Real Estate section! Her recent article (there will be copies for all) will help us look at systemic racial injustice in housing, what it looks like today and how it has an effect on us all no matter where or how we live.

The Q&A will be led by Joan Grangenois-Thomas, community advocate, founder of local Read/Talk/Act Book Group, Port Chester Village Trustee and Deputy Director for U.S. Rep. Mondaire Jones.

In honor of the upcoming Martin Luther King weekend we have an opportunity to learn and think about the history, inequities, and still-existing racial discrimination and segregation in housing that run deep in Westchester and our nation. Housing was a crucial part of Kings vision for economic justice, and 53 years after his assassination his hopes for fair housing remains unfulfilled. Why? What are the mechanisms that make it so? And what can we do to help change it? Come learn, find out and be inspired in memory of Dr. King.
