World Jewry Committee Presents
A Jewish Culture Series: Exploring Judaism Through TV + Film

Jewish characters have existed as long as the medium itself. But in recent years, these portrayals have become even more relevant and are taking on new forms with more radical opinions and commentaries on the world than ever before. In this 3-part series, we welcome a broad range of speakers to fill us in on contemporary Jewish characters.

Isaac Butler, a writer and theater director, will discuss the Jewishness of Transparent and how it is leaving such a strong mark our culture. It feels as Jewish as a Seder Plate, or Jon Stewart’s original last name. This is, after all, a show whose first season ended with Maura, the trans matriarch of the Pfefferman clan played by Jeffrey Tambor, resignedly muttering “Oy gevalt” in an episode titled “Why Do We Cover the Mirrors?” He is co-writing the upcoming book The World Only Spins Forward, a history of Angels in America.
