The Bronx Jewish Community Council needs volunteers! WJC adults, teens, as well as younger children have a unique opportunity for IN PERSON (masked) contact when performing the mitzvah of providing Passover foods for elders! Many are Jews from the former Soviet Union who settled in the northern Bronx and are home bound.

This is how it works:

  • On Sunday morning, April 3, starting at 9:00am, head to the Pantry site at 2157 Holland Avenue, Pelham Parkway.
  • There, you will receive bags of Passover groceries and a list (names and addresses) of screened BJCC clients who are awaiting this delivery
  • Feel free to request specific areas ( Pelham Parkway or Co-op City etc.), private homes or if you rather an apartment house, and to make as many or as few stops as you wish. When with younger children request clients where a short visit at the door might be more welcomed.
  • Best for two adults to go as parking could be an issue and that way one person can wait in front (double park or at a hydrant) as the other goes with the family to bring food to the recipient. Please help fulfill the mitzvah of making sure these homebound elderly Jews have Passover foods. The pandemic has only added to terrible isolation, the need may not only be economic but one of the spirit, and your brief visit brings joy to many.

Can’t make it? You can still help out by dropping off surplus FRESH DIRECT or similarly sized bags needed for the Sunday delivery on April 3. Drop off bags to 265 Overlook Drive, New Rochelle (a rubber made bin is provided on the porch) NO later than March 23. Consider performing this mitzvah, be it in person for this family friendly initiative in the Bronx above, or by helping the elder Jews from Project Ezra on the Lower East Side (see other posts for that information). Either way, the important task of providing Passover foods for the home bound elderly beckons.
