WJC SOJAC has joined ICNAW, the Interfaith Council for New Americans in Westchester, to co-sponsor the resettlement of refugee families. ICNAW is a volunteer-run organization supporting refugee families for 12-18 months, both financially and in their efforts to integrate into a new community successfully. They receive families directly from HIAS, a Jewish American nonprofit organization that provides humanitarian aid and assistance to refugees.
Soon HIAS will start placing Afghan refugee families around the country, including Westchester County. That is when ICNAW will begin the hands-on work of assisting the family in areas such as finding suitable housing and employment, obtaining necessary furnishings and dishware, registering family members for training or schools, tutoring children or adults in English, providing transportation to and from medical and governmental appointments, and introducing the family to cultural activities in the local area. Teens, ages 14 and up, are also welcome to volunteer for outdoor activities and homework help.
Checks can be made out to ICNAW (no tax deduction) – collected and bundled- and sent to Jeff Swarz, 100 New Roc City Plaza Apt 220, New Rochelle, NY 10801 or to ICNAWs paypal account (no tax deduction): PayPal.Me/icnaw
