About Rabbi Yoni Warren

Rabbi Yoni Warren joined the Navy following graduation from the Jewish Theological Seminary in May 2011. While in active service, he served first with the Marine Corps in Okinawa Japan where his duties took him across the Western Pacific and to Afghanistan. His next tour was at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. where he worked with Midshipmen from all faiths and no faiths while also serving as the rabbi for the Commodore Levy Chapel and Jewish Center. In 2018, he was assigned as Command Chaplain for a ship out of Norfolk VA where his deployments took him into the Mediterranean, Black, Red, and Baltic Seas, as well as the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Now stationed as Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Va., Chaplain Warren spends most of his days working with sailors and their family members who are experiencing illness and loss.

If you want to read all the ribbons on his chest, they all mean something: it almost serves as a resume if you know what you are looking at. From the top left: Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (1 star in lieu of second award), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (1 star in lieu of second award), Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, Operation Enduring Freedom Service Medal, Global War on Terror Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terror Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (with 3 stars signifying 4 deployments), Navy Recruit Training Ribbon, and United Nations International
Security Assistance Force Medal. We like shiny things.
